During World War 2, Italy's concentrated espresso was a little bitter for our soldiers. They started asking for extra hot water to make it more palatable. The Italians started calling the drinks, Americanos. Thus, the Americano was born. Americans are just good at revolutions...even when it comes to coffee ;)
